He was gripped with suffering.

كان تحت سطوة المعاناة

But not be gripped by it -

لكن بدون أن يُسيطِرا عليه.

The inhabitants were gripped with fear, but the commander ordered

كان الخوف يسود السكان، لكن القائد أمر

Panic gripped the Romans and it seemed  like another disaster was afoot.  

ساد الذعر في قلوب الرومان وبدا وكأن كارثة أخرى على وشك الحدوث.

As the gap closed, the troops in either line gripped their weapons and braced for impact!

وباقتراب المسافة بين الطرفين، بدأت القوات في كل صف بإمساك أسلحتها استعداداً للصدام
