Now Moses fed the sheep of Jethro, his father in law, the priest of Madian: and he drove the flock to the inner parts of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, Horeb.

Moisés era pastor das ovelhas de seu sogro Jetro, sacerdote de Madiã. Um dia, ele estava levando o rebanho deserto adentro e chegou a Horeb, a montanha de Deus.

And when Moses was gone from Pharaoh out of the city, he stretched forth his hands to the Lord: and the thunders and the hail ceased, neither did there drop any more rain upon the earth.

Moisés despediu-se do faraó, saiu da cidade e ergueu as mãos em prece ao Senhor. Os trovões e o granizo cessaram, e a chuva parou.

Therefore Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him: Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews: How long refusest thou to submit to me? let my people go, to sacrifice to me.

Moisés e Aarão apresentaram-se ao faraó e lhe disseram: Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus dos hebreus: "Até quando recusarás submeter-te a mim? Deixa partir o meu povo para me prestar culto."

And all the children of Israel did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. And the same day the Lord brought forth the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their companies.

Todos os israelitas obedeceram e fizeram o que o Senhor havia ordenado a Moisés e a Aarão. Naquele dia o Senhor tirou do Egito as tribos do povo de Israel.

And they saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore, and the mighty hand that the Lord had used against them: and the people feared the Lord, and they believed the Lord, and Moses his servant.

E os israelitas viram os egípcios mortos à beira-mar pela poderosa mão que o Senhor erguera contra eles. Por isso, o povo de Israel temeu o Senhor e teve fé nele e em seu servo Moisés.

So the people were thirsty there for want of water, and murmured against Moses, saying: Why didst thou make us go forth out of Egypt, to kill us and our children, and our beasts with thirst?

Mas o povo estava com muita sede e continuava reclamando a Moisés, dizendo: Por que nos fizeste sair do Egito? Foi para nos matar de sede junto com nossos filhos e nossos rebanhos?

And Moses came down from the mount to the people, and sanctified them. And when they had washed their garments, he said to them: Be ready against the third day, and come not near your wives.

Moisés desceu do monte e mandou que o povo se purificasse para adorar a Deus. E todos lavaram as suas roupas. Então Moisés lhes disse: Preparai-vos para depois de amanhã e até lá ninguém toque sua mulher.
