The problem with fundamentalists insisting on a literal interpretation of the Bible is that the meaning of words change. A prime example is 'Spare the rod, spoil the child'. A rod was a stick used by shepherds to guide their sheep to go in the desired direction. Shepherds did not use it to beat their sheep. The proper translation of the saying is 'Give your child guidance, or they will go astray.' It does not mean 'Beat the shit out of your child or he will become rotten', as many fundamentalist parents seem to believe.

El problema con los fundamentalistas que insisten en una interpretación literal de la Biblia consiste en que el significado de las palabras cambia. Un ejemplo claro es la frase: “te ahorras una rama de abedul y se pierde un muchacho”. La rama de abedul era una vara que usaban los pastores para llevar a las ovejas a donde necesitaban. Los pastores no golpeaban a las ovejas con esta rama. La traducción correcta de este dicho es: “muestra a los niños el camino o se perderán”. No significa: “golpea a tu hijo hasta que largue el cuero o se perderá”, como muchos padres fundamentalistas, al parecer, consideran.
